TRON Review (without seeing it)

Its important to note, I haven't seen the new Tron movie, but I'm going to write a review anyway.

The producers/director of TRON:LEGACY have done an amazing job convincing the public that the original TRON was a great movie.  If you can get past the outdated graphics, weird computer mumbo jumbo, and outfits that make everyone look the same, then you're more forgiving than I am.

I think a lot of the original movies fascination is based more on nostalgia then it being a great movie.  That's not to say that TRON wasn't an important movie in terms of it being on the ground floor of the computer animation boom, I'll certainly give it that. John Lasseter watched the movie and it inspired him to take computer animation to the next level, which led to the creation of PIXAR. However, John Lasseter is always seen wearing Hawaiian shirts, so....

Cover up that joystick, pal.

One of TRON:LEGACY's big draws is the 3D element. I've seen at least a dozen 3D movies since Nightmare Before Christmas was re-released, and its easy for me to say that I don't give a flying fuck about 3D. Its cool during the opening titles, then I just don't care and hardly notice it. If the the 3D parts only happened 2 or 3 times during the movie and were way more over the top like they were in the 80s, I think I'd appreciate it more. Also, after about an hour I start getting skeeved out over the glasses.

Somewhere in the past couple years, movies have skated by on the technical merits over the story telling. I didn't go see AVATAR for this reason. 3D should be the icing, not the cake.

I could be wrong. Maybe its awesome. I know they did a lot of rewrites, but that's either really good or really, really bad. I think a lot of people are going to walk out of the theatre and say "Oh, yeah" after realizing that the original TRON stunk.

UPDATE : I just saw the movie and it is incredible. Worthy of an Oscar in every category. I will see it over and over again. A real tour de force.
